Hayes threw his feet up on his desk and dialed Alonzo’s number. He knew he told Alonzo that he would contact him in a week, but Hayes had to call Alonzo, just to make sure he didn’t run off.

“Hello?” Alonzo answered in a shook voice “How are things going with you?” Hayes inquired good-naturedly.

“Why are you calling me man? You gonna fuck shit up,” Alonzo complained.

“Now, now. You just calm down. You don’t think I’m gonna let you out and don’t check up on you?” Hayes pointed out.

“But you said in a week.”

“Well, this is a courtesy call. I call the shots here. Do you know how much shit I had to pull, just to make this situation happen?”

“You aren’t even giving a chance to check shit out. I can’t just run up on people questioning them about bodies. That’s something hood niggas don’t talk about.”

“Well, I don’t want to hear all of that. Did you find anything out? I need a name!” Hayes threatened.

“I just told you! I’m working on it!” Alonzo whined.

“I want to see you in person on the day we scheduled.”

“Okay, I have no problem with that,” Alonzo said as he parked in front of his mother's house on Southern Boulevard. “Look, I have to go. Please don’t be calling me because my wife be having my phone. How would I explain you?”

“That’s not my problem,” Hayes replied smartly. “Just don’t you come telling me you don’t know nothing. I’ll throw your ass back in jail if you play games with me.”

“Why are you threatening me?”

“Results, results!” Hayes warned.

“Yeah, alright,” Alonzo replied in frustration as he ended the call.

“Why are you sitting out here? Come in the house.”

Alonzo was startled! He looked to find his mother standing outside the passenger's side door. He had been so engrossed in his phone conversation with Hayes; he hadn’t noticed his mother coming out of the house. “Mommy!” Alonzo beamed, getting out of his vehicle.

Janice was a beautiful woman in her late forties. “Boy, when did you get out of jail?” Janice asked as she took her oldest son into her arms. She was the mother of two.

“I wanted to surprise you,” Alonzo replied, hugging back.

“Well, bring your butt in the house!” Janice exclaimed, leading the way.

Once inside they went into the kitchen. Alonzo sat as his mother went about preparing him a meal of stewed chicken and rice. As Alonzo munched and his mother chatted, Alonzo’s childhood went through his mind. His mother played both parents and she was always there for her two sons. They didn’t grow up poor, but they were far from rich.

“When did you get here?” Alonzo’s 17-year-old brother Sincere asked, entering the kitchen. He gave his brother dap and then took a seat at the table.

“I just got here. What’s up with you?”

“Ain’t nothing. When did you get out?”

“Couple days.”

Sincere whispered in a conspiring tone. “I was up in Poughkeepsie.”

Alonzo was taken aback.” When?” Sincere had never gone to Poughkeepsie. He didn't have any reason to.
